Early Life and Struggles

Curtis was born in the South Jamaican neighbourhood of Queens, in New York City. The area at that time was gripped by the influence of the crack epidemic in the 1980s-1990s. His mother, Sabrina Jackson, who was a teenage drug dealer, had given birth to him when she was just 15. She raised him single-handedly, as there was no such information about his father, but she died mysteriously in a fire when Curtis was just 8 years old.

He moved in with his grandparents shortly after, but they remained largely unaware of the challenges he faced in his early life and his experiences on the streets. By the time he was 12, Curtis had already started selling crack cocaine and narcotics largely.

His early years were a blend of dreams that remained so, mixed with harsh realities. When he was 11, he was training as a boxer at local gyms under the mentor ‘Black Just’ who fostered discipline in him. However, the greed of quick drug money overshadowed his efforts, and this led to armed robberies and school absences.

He had attended Andrew Jackson High School, wherein he somehow managed to scrape through but in 10th grade, the authorities caught him with guns. This publicly humiliated him, and prompted him to admit to his grandmother about his drug-dealing tendencies.

This ended his formal education, and he did not get any traditional diploma. His street survival became his true education and it took precedence over academics.

Early Career Struggles and Shooting

A turning point came in 1994 at 19 when an undercover cop arrested him for selling 4 vials of cocaine. This ultimately landed him a potential 3-9-year sentence. He opted to go for boot camp rather than prison and completed his GED there. This is considered the pinnacle of his formal education. During this time, he started rapping in a friend’s basement and adopted the name ‘50 Cent,’ which was taken from a notorious 1980 robber.

These ultimately became his formative years, wherein he learned and experienced loss, crime, and minimal schooling. It forged the raw authenticity with which he would ultimately make his big bucks in the future.

Curtis Jackson started his musical career in the late 1990s under the mentorship of Jam Master Jay. He debuted with the audacious 1999 track ‘How To Rob’; which sparked widespread buzz despite Columbia Records dropping him.

After surviving a May 2000 shooting, with 9 bullets from Darryl Baum, 50 Cent released mixtapes like ‘Guess Who’s Back?’. He landed a $1 million Shady/Interscope/Aftermath deal with Eminem and Dr. Dre in 2002.  This went on to become the start of his successful career.
